This recent story saddened me for many reasons. A family of a teen who drowned during a discover scuba activity filed a Lawsuit against BSA and others involved. While I don't dispute the negligence of the divemaster and Scoutmaster involved in that tragedy. I fear that comparatively rare incidents like this will diminish BSA's excellent high adventure programming. My Eagle Scout son and I participated in the scuba live aboard at Fla. Sea Base and I felt the divemaster and everyone involved were exceptionally safety conscious. Most importantly the NAUI instructor who taught the scuba C course my son and his crew took was extremely thorough and responsible. BSA needs to recruit competent and careful aquatics leaders and screen out those who aren't. The BSA high adventure program teaches youth to train, prepare, practice and eventually take responsibility for their own and their crew members' safety. These are crucial life skills that serve them well into adulthood.
