I think it is time for another update on CTD!
Permalink Reply by Lisa Phillips on September 16, 2011 at 12:45pm Good one! I agree, as Larry would say "Get 'R Done!" No matter what happens, you have to be able to follow through and deal with the situation, it is never going to be text book. During in-service trainings I like to see things go wrong (sometimes intentionally) and how they deal with it.
One thing I think helps with the tube fetish, we have the guards discard their tubes when rotating to the zero depth area, mainly because they don't need it there, but it also helps them to get used to not hugging it all the time and think about how they will deal without it.
Permalink Reply by Lisa Phillips on November 9, 2011 at 11:58am Sure, you teach them all of the red cross standards, but you also practice at inservices what happens when things go wrong, such as losing the tube. Red Cross stipulates in their books that there will be facility specific policies that lifeguards need to learn and follow. This just becomes one of your facility policies, how to handle a rescue without a tube.
