I always felt that ARC lifeguard training should place greater emphasis on surveillance - its methods, implementation, and follow-up training during recertification and challenges.  While it might…Continue

Submersion During Swim Lessons

I seek your professional opinion on a matter involving swim lesson instruction methodology that is creating discord among swim instructors at my current place of employment. I hold a strong opinion in one direction, but I wanted to elicit an opinion unaffected by my own passions, which has made my explanation rather convoluted with cumbersome language. The issue involves submersion during swim lessons for our beginner level class. One group of instructors contend that it is appropriate to…See More

The Boy Who Cried Cryptosporidium

Imagining the horrors of a cryptosporidium outbreak, I feel fortunate that I have not yet worked at an aquatic facility that has experienced one. I would like to keep it this way.  We know that frequent monitoring and maintenance of proper pool chemistry is key to preventing outbreaks of recreational water illnesses. And UV and ozone systems seem to do a pretty good job breaking through the hard crypto shells.  To have the staff encourage the patrons to shower before swimming is important as…See More

"Great point, Nancy.  Informing user groups and the public about safety rules and behavior most certainly increases the safety standards of a facility.  Thank you for pointing that out."
