When was the last time you had some training?

Posted on January 27, 2013 at 9:29am 1 Comment

As aquatic professionals we owe it to ourselves and the public we serve to take part in regular professional development. In March the Association of Aquatic Professionals will be hosting their second annual conference in Austin, Texas. The first conference last year was a great event and the line up of speakers and traininers looks great again this year.

Maybe you can't afford to go to Texas to train, if so then I  still encourage you to find something closer to home. Local…

Drain Cover Recalls

Posted on May 26, 2011 at 5:03pm 2 Comments

Isn't this just perfect? A law gets passed before the drain products to comply are even available. Then we all have to spend precious dollars during the worse economic downfall since the great depression to replace perfectly good drains in pools with two main drains. We pay for the drains and the installation and certification, then they get recalled.

How much is this going to cost me to get the old ones out and newer ones in? If I have a faulty drain will I be out of…

Aquatic Treasures We Have Left Behind

Posted on June 11, 2010 at 8:46am 9 Comments

Our heritage as Aquatic Professionals is so rich. For decades our industry has been working to improve water safety and the rescue techniques used to save people. But I often wonder, in our effort to simplify our training programs, make courses shorter, reduce rescue techeniques to a couple of simple methods (everything starts from the rear rescue) have we left behind a lot of great lifesaving techniques that can still be applicable today?

Don't get me wrong here, I love to…

The 1-2 Response and Care Objective

Posted on January 21, 2010 at 1:46pm 3 Comments

For years now I have been blessed with the good fortune of being able to speak to and train with aquatic professionals all over our country. It is these opportunities and the chance they give to us speak with other professionals, compare notes and share gripes about the industry that helps form us as professionals and helps us develop ideas that may help improve our industry. In the mid 90's I was really focused on "Back to Basic" skill building and teaching young people principles of peer… Continue

When are the Politicians Going to Get Serious About Drowning Prevention?

Posted on September 2, 2009 at 3:21pm 1 Comment

Am I the only one that finds it ironic that the federal government can pass anti-entrapment legislation that is costing commercial, public and semi-public pools across the U.S. millions but has never allocated adequate resources to the prevention of drowning? Don't get me wrong, I am all for anti-entrapment drain covers and other devices that will prevent this tradegy from occuring, but the last I heard was that about 7 people each year die from entrapment in the U.S. and if I recall correctly,… Continue

Hey Jim,

I just wanted to let you know that I showed the 4-on1 webinar from San Antonio at the last run of in-services for my supervisory staff and it was really well received.  It made them think about how to get our staff to drill harder and work faster.  I also teach a lot of the same concepts so it  doesn't sound as crazy when they hear it from someone else.  Hope all is well on the left coast this summer.  Are you planning on making an appearance at the WWA conference in NO?

It was great to see your presentation at WWA. I could not agree more with the concept that response time is CRITICAL in the success of the rescue. Thanks for all the incite. I will be in touch with some questions as I am digesting everything from the conference.

Hello fellow Aquaholic.... During NAC, you mentioned a company that allows movie showing rights at pools at a great rate. Could you give me the name of the company again? Billy Pounds - Pearland Texas
