SRU Swim Club formed in the fall of 2010. I created the club because I loved swimming so much and was so disappointed to see the Varsity Team cut. We have attended meets at Miami of Ohio, Akron University, and even hosted our own meet at our school (Slippery Rock University). That was definitely a challenge, but it all came together last minute and we got the timing system to work!
The girls team placed first at Akron University out of four teams and the guys team placed 2nd our of four. There were three teams, including our team, at our home swim meet and our team placed 2nd (behind Penn State). At the Miami of Ohio swim meet, there were 11 different teams and I believe our team placed 8th overall.
We have between 20-25 swimmers that attend these swim meets and their skills range from anywhere between just starting swimming in college to those that have attended states in high school.
Unfortunately our Student Government at school does not support club teams as well as we would like, however we do have a budget of $630.00. This money is to cover the meet entry fees (usually $200 each meet) and gas for the meet. However, this is no where near enough so we ask swimmers to pay dues at the beginning of the fall semester. Last semester we had them pay $7 but found this was not enough. So next semester we are asking them to pay $20-30. This will help cover the additional cost of gas that the budget money didn't cover, additional meet entries, and hotel costs.
We also have many fundraisers we participate in such as hosting our own meet (we charge other schools to compete), selling swim club t-shirts, and selling Yankee Candles.
We were presented with an opportunity this year to attend Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. We had 17 swimmers interested. Unfortunately, SGA said they would not pay for any of it so the 17 dropped to 6 swimmers. 6 of us are so dedicated to swimming that we agreed to pay for the trip ourselves. This would be abiut 350 dollars a person. However, we kept fighting for money, and finally SGA gave in and gave us around $650. So we are very thankful for this.
If you want to know more about swim club, I would love to share!
