"Thats crazy I just an 80 year old man hit on one of my guards but found out she wasn't young enough for him.We really don't have a policy in place about that but that is a wonderful idea to…"

"First, we do not have a specific policy in our facility, although I am now thinking we may need to develop one now! I agree with all of the comments so far.  Based on the information you gave, this could be sexual harassment (especially the…"

"Great response Stephen!  I may add that failure to take steps to address the issue could result ultimately in a claim of third-party sexual harassment. This could occur when patrons harass staff, management knows about it and then fails to…"

policy on patrons hitting on Guards?

Does anyone out there have a firm policy on what to do when patrons show an interest in your staff that makes them uncomfortable?  I always tell my Guards to ask them politely but firmly to stop talking to them, citing that it is distracting them from their duties.  But we've recently had a patron that is in his 60's or 70's showing a less than healthy interest in one of our High School Lifeguards; asking her and other Guards about her personal life, making comments about her appearance to her,…See More

"mold" problem

Our facility has been battling a "mold" problem for the past several years in our shower rooms. We have had multiple janitorial companies come and look at it, and they advised us that it was not mold, but rather the paint breaking down and discoloring due to the high heat and humidity combined with the alkaline properties of soaps, shampoos, etc. We began repainting every couple of years but the frequency of need has increased. Our current discoloration is happening less than 12 months after…See More

Aquatic Personal Training

Does anyone out there have any experience with water based personal training?  One of our Water Aerobics Instructors has spent the last few months becoming certified and is eager to begin offering this service to our customers.  I am curious to hear from other operators about their experiences with this program? What is the length of the sessions? How much do you charge? What do you pay the instructor? etc.  Any info would be helpful. Thanks!See More

Help Wanted; are we looking at a national Lifeguard shortage?

Posted on June 12, 2012 at 10:00pm 5 Comments

As I troll the internet looking for news stories related to aquatics i am noticing a very real and scary trend over the past few weeks; there aren't enough Lifeguards.  In  Tulsa Oklahoma  the city was unable to open all five of their pools when scheduled last week due to a shortage of Lifeguards.  According to Tulsa Parks spokesperson Rob Hendrick the staff was five or six Lifeguards short of the number needed to safely open the last pool.  In Columbus Ohio the Columbus Recreation and Parks…

The irony is that if these pools have single main-drains they're going to be in the exact same boat in a few months.

I make it a point to try and be fit, after all fitness is part of our business, I'll come in early one or two days a week (really more like one day every other week) and spend 40 minutes or so on an exercise bike while reading the most current issues of Aquatics International or Parks & Recreation. But it wasn't until a conversation with my chiropractor earlier this week that it hit me; I almost NEVER swim in the very pool I run. Long story short; he said "Nick I'm seeing some more… Continue

Right on. No worries on the delay, I know how it goes. I appreciate you digging up the info. I am pretty intrigued by hard numbers regarding energy output for guards. Take your time; no rush :)
