How Much In-service is Enough?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Algreatus "Gator" Batton Nov 27, 2009. 7 Replies

I know I need to do lots of training with my staff to keep the pool safe. But how much is enough? My budget is tight and my staff's availability is limited in winter. How much training do you do?

"I really like your 1-2 RCO concept! I always strive to teach my guards the importance of quickly getting to open airway, oxygen, and AED, but have never seen a time guideline. I will have to try this next in-service! I totally agree with the zone…"

"Good answers Dewey. The 10 in both the Ellis and YMCA standard is a target time for spotting a victim in distress, however as a past associate of E&A, I do believe it does not mean 10 second scans, that is awaful fast to scan a large zone,…"

"5/30 is new to me...   The E&A waterfront requirement is 10/3; 10 seconds to scan ones area of responsibility, and 3 minutes to perform a complete underwater sweep of the area of protection."

Dewey Case replied to Peter Poolitzer's discussion What Do These Numbers Mean?
""10/10" refers to the 10 x 10 reaction time for the YMCA.  "10/20" refers to the 10/20 guideline for Ellis & Associates.  Both generally refer to 10 seconds to scan your zone & then the second number is a…"

"It is a language of its own, isn't it? I am only familair with the 10/20, which is ten seconds to spot the victim, 20 seconds to get to the victim. I will be interested to see what the others refer too!"

John McGowan replied to Peter Poolitzer's discussion What Do These Numbers Mean?
"10 seconds to spot victim and 20 seconds to get to them 5 minutes to spot and 30 minutes to get. I believe that is waterfront"

"Is there any possibility someone is doing it to get out of practice? or to sabotage a coach? You need to figure out the why to put a stop to it. Lifeguards should be able to give clues as to who the culprit is. This is where you have to find your…"
