The first step to becoming a lifeguard is to get certified. There are several certifying organizations, including the American Red Cross, Ellis & Associates, YMCA, and StarGuard. After successful completion of the course, lifeguards receive a certification that is valid for two to three years and provides everything a lifeguard needs to know before applying for a job.
