90% of What Are Out of Compliance With VGB?

I got 4 phone calls the other day because people saw something on the news saying "90% of the pools in the U.S. are out of compliance with the new VGB law and are posing a safety threat to swimmers". I wonder who actually has an accurate enough grasp on the number of "public pools" in the U.S. to be able to say how many are out of compliance.

This situation is a perfect example of government and media out of control. First we get legislation formulated obviously without much… Continue

Texas Swimming Center Renovation

After 31 years the world renowned Texas Swimming Center is undergoing a major overhaul! This year we are focusing on all the plumbing, filters, pumps, motors, sanitation and all electrical.

Next year we will focus on overhauling our HVAC systems. We have conducted some extensive study on how air moves in a natatorium. We have conducted actual tests as well as some interesting computer modeling. Beyond trying to accomplish a comfortable environment, we are looking at keeping the… Continue

Article in July Issue- Lessons learned

Many thanks to the AI folks for publishing my article on Children with Autism and waterparks in 'LESSONS LEARNED' this month.
One huge thing I did learn from speaking to Autism experts that was not included in the article was to always mention the person before the condition. For example, Child with Autism rather than Autistic child. It shows respect for the individual and that is something that will remember most from this experience.

Thanks,

Andrew

Don't let Swim Club's Blatant Racism Stand!

Too often when bad things happen, good people stand by and don't know what to do. I can't stand by what happened in Philadelphia over the past few days, and I hope you'll help me change it.

What happened is that a private swim club refused service to a summer camp group of black children because they were "changing the complexion" of the pool. This happened… Continue

New CPSC Chair Warns Against VGB Non Compliance

Got this email from Scott Wolfson today that every aquatics professional should heed:

To the pool and spa safety community:

Please take a moment and watch the following story, which aired on The Today Show this morning. The new CPSC Chairman, Inez Tenenbaum, would like all of you to heed her message that public pools and spas that are not in compliance with Sec. 1404 of the P&SSAct should not be open.…

Too much "Poop" in the pool

I am very frustrated!!! For the last several years we have had maybe one fecal accident in our pool. Since summer began this season we have had five (5)! That's right in little over a month we have had 5 accidents. What makes it even worse is that we cannot find where it's coming from. I think I traced yesterday's "catch" to an older gentlemen who I know has been diagnosed Alzheimer's disease. So it's not just children.

My thinking is that my guards have become more alert to the… Continue
